Cable News Propaganda
Posted by patriotslog
In the fall of 1995 Time Warner Cable and Turner Broadcasting struck a deal that would allow the entertainment giant of Time Warner to acquire Turner. Many have argued that real journalism is dead, and they can point to this acquisition as the genesis of the demise. Turner Broadcasting was the company which produced CNN, and when it was sold the news channel stopped being about news and started being about ratings. Since that day we have gradually gotten to where we are today; three 24 hour cable news channels devoted to nothing but… propaganda.
CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC; the three largest propaganda stations have mutated from news and journalism into biased opinions and agenda analysis with the attempt to woo viewers into becoming fans by confirming their pre-determined views. Just about the only truth we can get from these stations is that only telling one side of the story never results in anything good for America. Americans want to be told their political views are correct; therefore they tune into the propaganda station which suits their views best and have their opinions confirmed by biased coverage and half told stories. The act of ignoring reality and choosing only to listen and consider one’s own perspective is called cognitive dissonance. Simply because one does not like what they hear does not make it true. Many of the history’s best ideas and bravest advancements have been what people did not want to hear. Galileo, Einstein, Columbus, and even Jesus are just a few of the most influential authors of ideas that people initially did not want to hear. Can you imagine an entire world that refused to investigate any of these ideas simply because they did not like what they might find? People ought to always seek out new perspectives, because if the opinions one has cannot withstand challenging, they are not worth having in the first place.
Unfortunately this is the state of cable “news”. Recently, the Fox Propaganda Channel went too far. On Fox and Friends the station churned out a video that looked very similar to an attack ad against President Obama. The problem was that the video was not produced by the Romney campaign or any affiliated Political Action Committee; it was produced by Fox Propaganda. The video depicted President Obama as a liar who did not follow through on his campaign promises. The problem is not that the video is untruthful; the President certainly has not fulfilled many of his promises. The problem is that a station which claims to report news is telling voters how to vote. Fox Propaganda believes their viewers are not smart enough to make their own choice; therefore they abandoned any credibility they had and took the same rout as daytime talk shows and told their viewers how to make choices. A channel which claims to have journalistic integrity or report news cannot take sides; this creates a bias, resulting in only telling one side of the story. That is the very definition of propaganda. At least when Keith Olbermann was found having donated money to Democratic campaigns MSNBC feigned integrity by suspending him, even if for a short time; now an entire network is devoted to this conflict of interests.
The other problem with this video is that by saying voters should not support President Obama because he did not hold up to his campaign promises, it implies that Mitt Romney would fulfill all of his. This is certainly as much a lie as any of President Obama’s campaign promises. The fact is campaign promises are now expected to be broken by most Americans, and Mitt Romney is no exception. Patriotslog does not endorse either candidate, but Mitt certainly cannot truly wave a magic wand and provide a job for every college graduate, or cut the federal deficit using the Paul Ryan plan. Not that these things are to the fault of Mr. Romney; the fact is the President has far less influence over such things than any of us would like to believe. Of course Fox will say nothing if Mitt Romney is elected and fails on some of his campaign promises.
It is a shame that the three largest cable news networks are now propaganda networks. Gone are the days when integrity was prevalent enough for those who held influence to realize they needed to also be honest and responsible. Rather they peddle their influence for petty cash, selling out journalism for ratings and profits, making them no better than the Wall Street Mongols who hijacked our economy. The fruits of their labors are not hard to find. Not long ago it was discovered that Fox Propaganda viewers were the least informed of all people in a study of political and international issues; meaning Fox actually does little credible reporting on anything. Unfortunately the CNN and MSNBC propaganda channels were hardly better. When a story has hundreds of facts it is complete manipulation for these networks to focus on and report only the few facts that will confirm their viewer’s biases. To really be informed patriotslog suggests ABC, CBS, NBC, BBC, Politico, and NPR.
Fortunately there may be some hope. CNN ratings have dropped lately, and the channel has been struggling to keep up. Unfortunately this means their viewers could be leaving for Fox, which has massive regular followings, or MSNBC, which can be slightly more liberal, to further confirm their biases, and continue to be herded like sheep, only knowing what they are given and never learning what is beyond their pasture. But maybe, just maybe it is because viewers are tired of being treated like they cannot think for themselves. Opinion shows can be very productive; opinion channels, not so much. Ted Turner, the founder of Turner broadcasting and creator of CNN agrees. Since Time Warner’s acquisition of Turner Broadcasting he no longer holds any executive authority, but said “If I had the money, I’d think seriously about getting control of Time Warner and getting CNN to focus on serious journalism.”
Serious journalism is an art that cable propaganda networks have lost, to the detriment of society. In and of itself there is nothing wrong with the attack ad on President Obama. Failed campaign promises are fair game; just as Mitt Romney’s will be should he be elected. The problem is the lack of journalistic integrity displayed by Fox, CNN and MSNBC. The manipulation of their viewers and influencing of their view points by telling partial truths and stretching facts is propaganda history’s most radical dictators would be proud of. Turns out the “no spin zone” just twists, turns, and loops instead of spins. A channel that covers news would not have done what Fox Propaganda has done. Thank goodness Walter Cronkite was not alive to see this.

About patriotslogI am studying to achieve a double major in political science and journalism from the University of Kentucky. I am married to a wonderful woman named Sierra. I am starting this blog because I feel the political climate in Washington is carving deep canyons for our children to climb out of. Our representatives, on both sides of the isle, do not represent us, they represent the lobbyists. This blog is not to give answers, but to make people think. I believe the more we think about our ideas the better they will become; as opposed to becoming more and more intrenched in far left or right wing brainwash, where it seems nobody thinks anymore. I hope y'all enjoy.
